DETAILS:
The dominant feature of Egypt’s Northern Costal Zone is the low lying delta of the River Nile, with its large cities, industry, agriculture and tourism. The Delta and the narrow valley of the Nile comprise 5.5% of the total area of Egypt but over 95% of its people of which 25% live in the Low Elevation Coastal Zone (LECZ) areas. Due to the concentration of much of Egypt’s infrastructure and development along the low coastal lands and the reliance on the Nile delta for prime agricultural land, coastal inundation or saline intrusion caused by anthropogenic climate change induced sea-level rise will have a direct and critical impact on Egypt’s entire economy. In addition to the current trends, Egypt’s Mediterranean coast and the Nile Delta have been identified as highly vulnerable to climate change induced Sea Level Rise (SLR). The proposed project aims to integrate the management of SLR risks into the development of Egypt’s Low Elevation Coastal Zone (LECZ) in the Nile Delta by strengthening the regulatory framework and institutional capacity to improve resilience of coastal settlements and development infrastructure, implement innovative and environmentally friendly measures that facilitate/promote adaptation in the Nile Delta, and establish a monitoring and assessment framework and knowledge management systems on adaptation.

DETAILS:
The Government of Egypt aims to undertake a comprehensive reform of its Solid Waste Management sector. GoE has identified PSIA as the tool to
i) Avoid any negative impacts of the reforms on vulnerable groups;
ii) Achieve equitable outcomes;
iii) Improve public acceptability and success of the reforms.
GoE intends the PSIA to have an ‘upstream’ effect on the reforms, by informing and shaping policy development at its outset, rather than assessing policy impacts once key design features have already been firmed up. To this effect the project will:
a) Analyze the impacts on the poor of different reforms options, including the role of the informal sector in the solid waste management sector;
b) Provide input to the reforms design, particularly on social inclusion aspects;
c) Enhance capacity of key government institutions to utilize PSIA tools and incorporate the results of this PSIA in the design and implementation of the reforms.

DETAILS:
Egypt is a Party to the Vienna Convention and Montreal Protocol. It also ratified the London, Copenhagen and Montreal amendments. The country is fully committed to the phaseout of HCFCs and willing to take the lead in assessing and implementing new HCFC phaseout technologies, particularly in the foam sector as it did for CFCs in 1992 when it submitted and completed the firm foam sector investment projects ever under the MLP. Egypt has local PU systems houses that frequently combine importations and distributions for major international chemical and equipment manufactures with local blending for SMEs. In addition, most international PU chemicals suppliers are represented with offices or their own system houses. The objective of this project is to develop, optimize, validate and disseminate low-cost systems for the use of hydrocarbons in the manufacture of PU rigid insulation and integral skin foams.

DETAILS:
The overall objective of this project, Phase II of the Egyptian Italian Environmental Cooperation Program, is to contribute to the protection of Egypt’s natural and cultural resources. Specifically, this project aims to enhance the capacity of the Nature Conservation Sector to establish and manage a decentralized national network of Protected Areas.
This project aims to strengthen the institutional capacity of the Nature Conservation Sector (NCS) of the MSEA/EEAA for planning and implementing nature conservation activities. These actions will contribute to the preservation and protection of the biotic communities of flora and fauna, as well as other natural resources constituting Egypt’s biodiversity assets. The project will assist EEAA staff to establish and manage a representative national system of protected areas with technical assistance in the key areas of planning, environmental impact assessment, licensing of economic activities and monitoring and evaluating their impacts within the National Protected Areas. The project will enhance NCS’s efforts to coordinate marketing, resource development and public relations activities. The project also supports activities in three protected areas (Siwa Oasis, Wadi Rayan Protected Area, and Gabel Elba National Park) serving as demonstration sites for testing and implementing measures designed to effectively devolve management of NCS functions to the protected areas.

DETAILS: This project aims at enabling Egypt to prepare and report its Second National Communication with the Conference of the Parties (COP) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) according to 17/CP8 and other guidance provided. It will be a follow up of previous studies already identified under a stocktaking exercise. The project will be working under a priority area / category selection approach in order to allocate resources in the most effective manner. The main components of the project are: (a) an inventory of greenhouse gases for the year 2000 and time series 1990-2000; (b) an update of analysis of potential measures to abate the increase in greenhouse gas emissions in Egypt; (c) an assessment of potential impacts of climate change in Egypt and adaptation measures; (d) preparation of the Second National Communication of Egypt and submission to the COP. In addition, public awareness activities and stockholder consultations will be cross-cutting along the overall course of this exercise. Therefore, the preparation of the Second National Communication is expected to enhance general awareness and knowledge on climate change-related issues in Egypt, and help taking them into account in the process of national planning and policy.
